KRUUSE I Infusion Fluids for Rabbits and Rodents There are many solutions available for maintaining or replacing fluid balances. The most commonly available are also suited for use in rabbits and rodents. Lactated Ringer’s solution is usually available in any clinic and recommended as standard fluid replacement solution. Dextrose or glucose 5% is another option, and it can be used to treat imbalances in cases such as mildly dehydrated rodents to prevent hypoglycemia, and can be given SC. This fluid type also makes a good partial replacement agent in anorexic patients, but caution is to be taken as it can increase fluid loss through the kidneys. Therefore, it can be preferable to give half of the calculated fluid volume as dextrose solution and the other half as lactated Ringer’s solution mixed in the same syringe if treating an anorexic patient. Sterile saline (0,9% NaCl) can be used as preventive hydration but is lacking electrolytes and will not replace any potential deficits. Remember to warm the fluids prior to use on small animals. Use a tray with warm water or a fluid warmer. www.kruuse.com
