KRUUSE I Infusion Placement Preparation Good preparation for IV catheter placement is just as important, as in any other case. For the little rodents, there is one thing to prepare a bit sooner: warm up the fluids! Once the fluids are warming (not in microwave) it is time to get all needed items out. Prepare everything before taking the animal out from the cage to reduce stress and keep it in comfortable and familiar surroundings. If using a topical lidocaine cream (EMLA), consider time for effect in the procedure. Applying and covering the skin with an occlusive dressing for 20-30 minutes prior to placement, should be sufficient to cause local anesthesia allowing catheterisation. Full skin-thickness will require 45-60 minutes. n Clipper n Appropriate size IV catheter (typically 24-26-gauge) n Microbore extension line or microbore T-connector (peadiatric) n Appropriate giving set, Burette Set, flow regulator or fluid pump n Pre-warmed gauze swaps for cleaning and sterilising the area n Syringe with heparinised saline (pre-warmed) for flushing n White porous tape n Elastic wrap n Eventually topical anesthetic cream (EMLA) www.kruuse.com
